Paper Anniversary

The one year anniversary is known as the paper anniversary. Why paper? Well, there is a couple theories. The first being because the first year can be the most fragile. Another is that newlyweds are often focused on making ends meet so gifts that are simple, i.e. paper, would make things easier and inexpensive.

Rob and I have been very fortunate that we have not had to barely scrape by. We have been able to buy a house even within our first year. But we have had to learn about budgeting and working together on money matters. As far as the other theory: marriage is hard. You pretty much have to work on your relationship constantly. You have to learn what compromise is. You have to think of the other person first. Marriage is hard and sometimes frustrating, but completely worth it.

All that being said, we just recently celebrated our one year anniversary (June 25). Of course our anniversary took an interesting turn because we spent the entire day moving into a house. Pretty awesome anniversary gift to each other.

But we actually did have little gifts for each besides the house, that we exchanged at 5:00am that morning before the move began. They were both DIY projects that we spent time working on, which can mean more than just buying something.

So first he gave me my present:

Yup, that's my creative husband. He had an explanation about the imperfection and perfection of it all, but that's for me and me only. Sorry. I will share almost all of our lives with all your readers out there, but this one is for me.

As for what I made him:

The box is unfinished because I wasn't sure I was allowed to stain while pregnant. And actually the inside isn't finished either because those cards are our story. All our big moments and firsts cataloged like library cards. (I found this amazing site that you put in your information you want then you save and print - super easy and super awesome!).

We may not have spent a lot on our anniversary gifts to each other but we didn't have to. They were thoughtful and simple. Plus remember the whole house thing. We have a lifetime still together. All we really needed was to spend the day together.

So bring on year two. We will face it head on together. Our story is just beginning and we can't wait to see what comes next. Rumor has it there'll be a baby... : )
