Doing Some Learning

For the last six weeks I have been taking free online courses via Coursera. This is an online source where you can take classes in just about any subject from universities and colleges all over the world. I was introduced to this free online class world by a friend, so mentioned that she had done this after I had mentioned an interest in nutrition and wanting to learn more. After that conversation I looked up the website and started looking at the courses and quickly found several that I wanted to take.

I was actually excited. I had been looking for something to fill in some of my time and I thought doing something like this would be perfect. It would expand my knowledge basis, help make me feel productive, and give me something to do. I signed up for my first class that lasted five weeks and just finished last week. Upon the completion of this course I receive a certificate of completion that some colleges will even accept as a credit if you are interested in furthering your education on that subject.

At this point I'm less interested in doing that since I have a path right now that I'm happy with, but I thought it would be interesting to take a few classes on some subjects I'm interested in. Although I have looked a several different subjects, I decided my first courses would be nutrition classes.

I have been interested in nutrition since I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes while pregnant with Addison. I had to make some changes to my diet and at the time I didn't completely understand what or why I was doing all that I was doing. That was when I got my first crash course in nutrition and what I had to do to make things better and safe for my baby. But that interested didn't stop after she was born. My risk of getting type 2 diabetes increased. I also knew that I would have a baby that would need to be fed and I wanted to give her the best and healthiest start. So once she started table foods I really started looking into the healthiest choices and what she was supposed to eat and how much. But my knowledge was still somewhat limited. There is so much information out that that it's hard to figure out what is the best course to follow and what to believe. It gets overwhelming. But by taking classes, I have been able to understand both my nutrition and health, plus Addison's nutrition needs and health better.

These classes are anywhere between five weeks to seven weeks depending on the classes. There are endless topics in endless languages from countless universities around the world. This was a way for me to start testing out subject matters and see what I'm interested in before I possibly return to school one day (way in the future). And I can do it all for free and on my own time.
