The One With the 29 Month Old Who Isn't Talking

It's been awhile since I last did am update on how Addison is doing.  Mostly because she's doing great and there hasn't been much to update. Sounds boring but after having a stressful 2014, boring actually sounds perfect.

Addie is still getting help from Infant Toddler Services but she is done with the physical therapy part. She is walking. She can do some running, as much as a toddler runs. She is climbing. Heck the kid is walking in the grass, downhill, barefoot. And if you know Addie at all then you know that that is huge. She really has come so far and I'm so proud of her.

So the help that Addie is getting now ranges from teaching her some motor planning to learning how
to be flexible to talking. A lot of the emphasis at the point has been on motor planning and flexibility. Although she still gets rigid about some things, she goes with the flow better than she used to. All people are creatures of habit and two years aren't any different. Addie has things that she likes a certain way and when things get messed up to her, she gets upset. However now she bounces back quicker or sometimes it doesn't bother her at all. Honestly she gets more upset when I mess something up than anyone else, including her dad, because I'm with her all day and I should know better. And although I know the importance of her being flexible, especially because when she gets to school things won't always be the way she wants, I truly think the bigger issue is her not talking.

I am no expert by any means but I think some of the temper tantrums and her inflexibility is a result from her not being able to express herself and communicate. I would get frustrated a lot too if no ne understood me.

As far as talking is concerned, she is talking more. Or at least trying more. There are some words that are clear. And some not so much. She still does a lot of her babble which no one can understand. She has also picked up three two word phases: go away, back off, let go.  Apparently nobody's going to walk all over her.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't worried about her lack of talking at just shy of 2 1/2 years. But she has shown me time and time again that she will do things in her own time. But as she gets older and closer to preschool age, I worry about her falling behind. The kid is smart. She is very bright but she just can't really talk.

She'll get there and in the meantime we keep talking to her (duh) and getting her help and encouraging her to use her words (I seriously use that phase a lot!). I am so proud of how well she is doing and how far she has come. This kid is a fighter and just keeps pushing forward.

  1. That's so great that she's come so far lately! I've got an almost two year old with one real word, and my first grade teacher mother keeps reminding me she has students all the time that are doing great and didn't talk until they were four! But those babbling conversations to themselves are oh-so-cute for now :) She looks so happy! :)
