Being Married to a Leftie

Did you know that today is left-handed day? Yup, there's a day out there that honors the 10%
of the population who is left-handed. In our household I am in the minority actually. I'm the sole right-hander of the household. Both Rob and Addie are left-handed which provides different problems sometimes. Although there are some oddball advantages too.

When talking to Addie's doctor a few months ago about her being left-handed, she said it's nice that my husband is left-handed and will be able to help her. That there are some things you don't think about that left-handed and right-handed people do differently, such as tying shoes. If I want to teach Addison I have to sit across from her where as my husband can sit next to her and work with her differently than I can teach her. I never even thought about the fact that Rob and I tie our shoes differently.

But this is about being married to a leftie. So here are a few oddball things I have noticed over the years we have been together:

+ We put the paper towels on the holder differently. I struggle every single time he refills the paper towel (although I am thankful when he does refill it for me) because it's opposite of what I think it should be. I can't tell you how many times I have flipped it around to make it easier for me when I'm cooking.

+ We can hold hands and still write. Yeah, bet you didn't think of that one did ya?! I can't say that we have ever actually done it, but we could. We can hold hands and do anything really with our dominate hands.

+ Be careful where you sit at dinner. I think everyone who knows a leftie knows the hazards of this one. If you don't think about it and just sit down you will likely bump elbows throughout your dinner.

+ He gets really frustrated at me when we are cooking together because we are constantly flipping the handle of the pan back and forth. I hold the handle when with my left and stir with my right. He then has to move it to hold it with his right and stir with his left. Whenever he cooks and I help teach him, he gets frustrated me at a lot.

+ Also when it comes to cooking, if I'm showing him something I show him and set everything up for me then he has to change everything so he can actually do it with his left hand. It's always opposite.

+ We only have certain pens around the house. He doesn't like ball-point pens because instead of pushing the pen which is how they work, he pulls it and it doesn't work as well.

The truth is that there are probably a dozen little things that he does differently than me just because he's a leftie, although there are a dozen more things he does differently because he's just a different person.

But despite our sometimes frustrations of doing things different, I love him all the same. And I love my leftie daughter. She is basically Rob only a girl and a lot smaller. I love my two lefties!

xo, B
