The One with the 35 Month Old Who Is Done with Infant Toddler Services

We are closing a chapter that I have been more than ready to close from some time now. For over a year now Addison has been getting help from Infant Toddler Services. When we started with Infant Toddler Services she wasn't walking, she wasn't talking, and she was barely playing but more moving things from one place to another over and over again.

Now she is walking, running and moving around easily without ankle braces. She is talking, although still delayed she is able to communicate. She plays with everything from trains to coloring to pretend play. She has come so far this time.

I'm not going to say that I wasn't frustrated at times with ITS and where their focus was. At first my
concern was with Addison not walking, and I had to push to make that a main focus point. They were more concerned with her repetitive play and lack of flexibility with her play. But finally I won and we got her walking with the help of a physical therapist. Then once she started moving, we shifted our focus. Once again we had conflicting concerns. I wanted to get her communicating in any way that I could. They were still more concerned with her play. We never were given a speech therapist but given an occupational therapist who helped all around. But the main focus was definitely not on speech.

She definitely started talking more and finding ways to communicate but our sessions were focused more on the way she played. Although my frustrations were growing, I decided not to push. I was ready to be done with ITS but instead of go-against them to decline services and potentially end things on an awkward note, I decided to wait out the last few months. It wasn't as if the sessions were benefiting her.

Addison is about to turn three in just a couple of weeks which means she will no longer be a toddler, which was part of the reason for the end of their services with us. The other reason is because at three she officially becomes a preschooler and the school district takes over her care from here on out. We only need to make the decision how much help she gets from the school district. Much like with ITS, we have full control over the services she receives or doesn't receive.

I can't even begin to explain how far Addison has come. We know how unusual it is for a kid to progress as quickly as Addison has after the regression she went through. Although there were times when I was definitely frustrated with Infant Toddler Services and where their concerns were focused, I was definitely pleased with the time and care they took with Addison. I appreciate how much they cared for her. She had a good team behind her and she has come so far in the last year.

So just as we said good-bye to her ankle braces about a month ago, we say good-bye to Infant Toddler Services. It feels good to close doors and be moving forward.
