A Pregnancy Story: Week 27

You are about the size of a head of cauliflower at almost 2 pounds. You are also measuring at about 14 1/2 inches long with your legs extended. You are now on a regular cycle of sleeping and waking. You open and close your eyes. And you might even be sucking your fingers. Your brain is extremely active now with all the brain tissue developing. You definitely shouldn't come now but if you had to then your lungs would be capable of functioning with medical help; although your lungs are still immature. You might be getting hiccups more often now, which I will be able to feel.

I feel very hormonal. A Christmas song almost made me cry the other day. The cat crawling on my night stand made me irrationally angry. I get frustrated quickly and worry about the weirdest things. I also feel very tired. I didn't have to worry about insomnia the first time around but this time I feel like wired way into the night but the next day all I want to do is sleep. Maybe this will continue after you are born so we are on the same schedule while you have your days and nights confused. My body is definitely worn down. We are now going to every other week OB appointments, which seems crazy that we are already this far along. I just had an appointment and you are doing good. Your heart rate is in the 130s, and next week I get to see you again thanks to another sonogram. I had another glucose tolerance test this last appointment too which means we find out soon if I have gestational diabetes again. I'm definitely hungry a lot. I have weird cravings at the weirdest times. I'm gaining about a pound a week now, putting me at about 10 pounds or so gained. You are constantly moving these days which I love.

When I was in my last few months of pregnancy with Addison I noticed that instead of my belly button popping out, my belly button seemed to look bruised. I thought it was weird and asked my doctor about it. She told me that I had an umbilical hernia. We learned that it wasn't anything serious unless I ended up doubled over in pain which means my bowels have pushed through. It's something that can be fixed but the surgery (unless my bowels are forced through) but not something recommended to be fixed during pregnancy because there is a higher risk during pregnancy but also because the baby continues to grow and will just cause the separation again. In fact my doctor doesn't even recommend having surgery to fix it until after we are done having kids because it will just happen over and over again. Although this isn't harmful to me or the baby, it definitely has some downsides. It's uncomfortable to touch or if I do too much moving around. The good news is that it should return to normal after this pregnancy. This time around the pain started a lot earlier than it did when I was pregnant with Addison, but this time I have been bigger from the beginning. I have definitely had to be more careful with my belly because of it which is sometimes hard when you have a preschooler who uses her elbows a lot when she climbs up next to you. This time around I have been more conscious of it and more careful to not lift anything heavy (which is somewhat impossible when your 40-pound three-year-old needs up getting into her car seat). I'm definitely looking forward to not having any pain around that area again after walking too much or doing too much bending over.
