A Pregnancy Story: Week 36

You are about the size of a Crenshaw melon, measuring more than 18 1/2 inches long. You are about
6 pounds and still gaining weight. You are losing most of the downy covering of hair that has covered your body, and as the vernix caseosa (a waxy substance) that has covered and protected your skin. As you lose these things, you start swallowing both, among other things, which results in a blackish mixture called meconium that will form the contents of your first bowel movement. At the end of the week you will be considered "early term" but at 37 weeks you could be perfectly fine if you were born. In fact your sister came at exactly 37 weeks, although my water started leaking on the day before. [I found out that if she had actually been born on that day that she would have had to visit the NICU at least for a little while but most likely would have been fine. She decided to wait another day and didn't have to go anywhere.]

It feels like you are never going to get here. Time has seriously slowed down now that I'm in my ninth month. I am shocked that I'm already in my ninth month but I am so ready to meet you. At this point if you decide to come, my doctor said that she would not stop labor. It would be best if you waited until you were full-term in another week but we aren't going to stop you if you come now. Honestly I would love if you waited until full term but I'm also so uncomfortable that I would be okay not being pregnant anymore. We are now at weekly OB appointments. I was supposed to get my cervix checked and see if these contradictions are actually doing anything, but I ended up seeing someone else so that didn't happen. I'm a little bummed because I was so curious. I guess no hints if my body is getting ready or not. You are going to keep us guessing. You are measuring just under a week ahead however and your head is nice and low. But otherwise you are good and healthy. I did test positive for Group B Strep which means I have to go on IV antibiotics when I go into labor but we are both fine otherwise. You are still causing me all kinds of pain in my back and rib cage. And the newest pain now is in my pelvis which makes it uncomfortable to walk sometimes. I'm not feeling all that great this week. I'm definitely still tired because I'm always tired. I am constantly taking trips to the bathroom because it seems that you think my bladder is a punching bag. Plus the bonus of a sore throat this week. It is just getting harder and harder on my body these days but I'm hanging in there. But like I have said over and over, I am so ready to meet you!

This week I had my baby shower. In truth I didn't think I was going to have one. I'm not sure what's usual the second time around. Although we didn't need much, it was still great to celebrate this little boy. I did find that there was some things I needed after all such as a new baby-wearer, diapers and of course clothes. Clothes and diapers are definitely the biggest things since I don't have a lot of newborn diapers left from Addison and nearly no boy clothes since this is the first boy in the family. I didn't really need anything major but it was great to see family. We can get pretty disconnected out here in Kansas so it was good to catch up. We didn't do anything fancy which was perfect for me. It was mostly just food, presents and talking. The few holes that I had in what I needed for Connor were filled in, plus some, which is awesome. This boy is going to be a pretty awesome dressed little man.
