First Time vs Second Time

I always knew that being pregnant while already having a kid would have some new challenges that I never had the first time around. There has definitely been some things I never thought about when getting pregnant a second time.

I worried quite a bit about the impact of another baby would have on Addison but I never thought about what it would be like being pregnant with a three-year-old.

First Time Around
*sleep in after being up late getting kicked all night
*snack and lazy with food
*if your body hurts then you can just lay down and take a nap or relax
*everything is new and exciting, especially kicks
*go to the bathroom quickly and easily whenever the baby suddenly uses your bladder as a punching bag
*doesn't matter when you go into labor because it's just the two of you so time doesn't matter
*you are exhausted all the time!
*every little thing is new and exciting and also terrifying; and you can't help but wonder if it's normal
*you take classes and research and read hoping that you won't be completely clueless when your baby finally comes

Second Time Around
*despite how much you want to sleep, the small kid will get up and want to eat much earlier than you want
*need to actually have real food for the kid because you are still a mom and you still feel like you need to provide a healthy meal
*your kid doesn't understand why you are wanting to nap in the middle of the morning when you should be playing which means no sitting down for you - in fact she'll want to play a game that requires you to bend over and move around a bunch
*still exciting when you start to feel the baby kick but after a while you just want them to move out of your rib cage
*not as easy as it once was to get to a bathroom - if you are out in public then you have to somehow convince your kid that going to the bathroom with you would be fun and try to do it before you pee your pants
*you have to have a plan of what will happen to your kid when you go into labor, and hope and pray that you don't go into labor in the middle of the night
*you are exhausted ALL THE TIME!!
*you have been there before so you understand your body a little better and know that all those little nudges and moves and all those other things you feel are normal
*no classes or researching or reading - maybe just looking back over things from the same week during your last pregnancy - and you know you'll be clueless because that's just how it goes, especially when you are exhausted with a newborn.

The truth is that I think it's completely amazing how little people come into the world. I'll admit that I myself am not a fan of being pregnant and I look forward to having my body back again but that doesn't mean I'm not thankful or amazed at how it all works. But I would do it over and over again because I know how amazing it is to watch your kid grow and learn and become their own person. Pregnancy isn't a walk in the park as it is, and it's definitely more exhausting be pregnant when you already have a kid but that's just the nature of the beast.

But we all know the truth, as soon as this little boy finally decides to join us and I get to hold him in my arms, I'm going to get pregnancy amnesia and before we know I'll be bugging Rob about having another.

xo, B
