Waking Up Tired

We figured out pretty early that bedtime routine is pretty important in the world of kids. We started one with Addison pretty early and although it has changed slightly over the years, it is mostly the same (read about it here). Since Addison was just a baby, Rob has done pretty much every bedtime. It gives me a break but it also gives them a chance to be together. It has worked and I definitely haven't had a problem with it.

But things had to change once Connor came into the picture. We had to figure out how to work out bedtime with two kids. It was no longer going to be so easy for me to do nothing while Rob takes care of bedtime - in fact that wasn't going to happen anymore.

Right after Connor was born I kept him while Rob and Addison did their normal routine. He would take her upstairs to go to the bathroom then brush and floss her teeth. She liked to put on her own pajamas then would come down to hug me and kiss Connor. Then they headed back upstairs to read one or two books and sing a song. Then she was down for the night. All the while I was still trying to breastfeed and Connor mostly slept on us anyway so I had him.

But as the weeks worn on and Rob headed back to work and breastfeeding wasn't working, I needed a break from the tiniest munchkin. It wasn't that I wanted to deal with Addison - especially those days when she was really being a threenager - but I needed a break from dealing with the more wakeful, sometimes fussy all day baby.

So we talked about how to handle bedtime and decided we would alternate. Basically one night Rob would handle Addison's bedtime while I dealt with Connor then the next night we would switch.
For a couple weeks that worked great until I started having more days when I needed a break from Connor as he was more restless during the day. Addison also started having an opinion about who she wanted to put her to bed, so our system fell apart. Some day we gave Addison a choice other days we didn't. More often than not now it's Addison who's voicing her opinion on who's putting her down for bedtime.

So regardless of who puts Addison down, we follow the same routine. For Connor, he gets a bottle sometimes at varying times then we put him down. Unlike in earlier weeks, now we put him down more often awake and he goes to sleep fairly quickly on his own to his cello music. There are definitely nights when he fights sleep more than others but otherwise he's pretty easy.

Addison we don't hear from until the next morning usually about 8 in the morning. But Connor we see in the night. He used to wake up about midnight or so then again at 3 or 4 then again about 6 or 7. It was every two-three hours in the early weeks. But as he has gotten older, he is sleeping longer and goes longer between feedings. Now he's sleeping 6-7 hours a night from when we put him down and we usually see him about 3-4 then not again until 7-8 in the morning.

It has made a huge difference in our sleep and ours moods around the house. Especially since he's being difficult with napping during the day, only doing so if he is in the carrier right now. I am definitely ready for him to start napping as well as he sleeps at night but if it's good night sleeping I get then I'll take it.

We have blessed so far for a second time with a good sleeper. We will definitely take it.

xo, B
