Wonder Week

When Addison was a baby she would have a random really bad week. At first I thought it was just a bad week but then I learned about Wonder Weeks, and looking back realized that her bad weeks lined up with a Wonder Week. At first I was doubtful but the more I read about them and the first one she hit once I learned about it, I was a believer. (Read about it here.)

And I had completely forgotten about Wonder Weeks until just recently.

If you haven't heard of Wonder Weeks then basically they are weeks throughout the first couple of years where your baby is going through a major development change So often times babies are needier and fussier. The signs of a wonder week vary slightly and are resolved pretty quickly after the baby has gone through the development. But while you are in the middle of one, it feels like it is never going to end. By the end of the week (sometimes shorter, sometimes longer), your baby will be able to do new things however.

Just last week we started our first Wonder Week with Connor. My easy laid back kid was suddenly transformed into a very needy kid. He wanted to be held or touched all the time. He fusses and cries more for no reason. Suddenly he was just a different kid.

Truthfully I forgot how awful these weeks are. It's frustrating all day long and exhausting into the late night. You want to help and stop the crying but have no idea what to do and actually knowing there is nothing you can do to help. I try to remind myself that if I can get through this week then I get to see Connor do a social smile (although those gas smiles are pretty awesome).

The first day I spent the day frustrated just trying to get him to sleep even for a little while. He wouldn't settle. But he would cry every time I would put him down so he didn't want that either. I tried walking around with him which resulted in him giving me a little half-smile and staring wide awake at everything but the under side of his eyelids. Eventually I got him to sleep after spending a long time rocking in the rocking chair, but by that point I was terrified to move so once again he slept on me (all the while Addison kept herself busy bringing me books to read then playing with toys in the room). All in all that day he was awake almost all day leading to an overly tired baby that night.

The trend continued into the next day only a little better. My stress level was off the charts however which was definitely making this all worse. I did my best to remember that this was short-lived and he would turn back into my easy, laid back baby soon. But when you've been cried at all day it's really hard.

Luckily I have a couple more weeks before we hit the next one so I get a little reprieve until we do this all over again at 8 weeks.

xo, B
