Not Just a Mom

If I were to be completely honest, I struggle on a regular basis. I have doubts about the decision to be a stay-at-home mom (yes I made that choice 3 1/2 years ago but still one I question every once in awhile). I have doubts that I'm a good mom. I have doubts that I'm doing the right thing. I have doubts that I'm doing anything right.

And the truth is that being a mom is hard. It's really hard. It doesn't matter if you stay home or work, it's hard. There are pros and cons to both actually. In the end I know I made the right decision to stay home with my kids. But that also means that sometimes I feel like all I am is a mom and I wonder if that's enough. Because I'm just a mom.

But no mom is just a mom. We all wear so many hats.

Nurse -- There are owies to kiss, band-aids to apply, medicines to give, temperatures to take, noses to wipe.

Cook -- I make breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks. I plan meals and make food. I grocery shop. I put food away. I prepare food. I clean up meal messes and food messes. I do the dishes. I pour drinks of apple juice, milk and water. There is always food on the table, in a bowl, or on the floor.

Teacher -- Teaching is a constant job. I taught girl to walk and talk - and I'll do it again. I taught the alphabet and numbers. I teach how to take a fall and get back up. I teach how to be aware and respectful to others.

Sheriff -- I lay down the law. I have discussions about what was done wrong and how to help fix it. I use time outs and count down from five.

Maid -- I clean. I clean. I clean. I clean.

Driver -- To doctor appointments, to speech sessions, to the park, to play dates. I get kids in and buckled then out again then in again and out again.

Cheerleader -- I cheer for successes. I cheer for small things learned and accomplished. I cheer for baby steps. I cheer for small words spoken.

Advocate -- I fight for kids even when everyone else doubts me. I trust my mom's instincts and don't give up when I think there's something wrong. I want the best care for my kids and will keep searching for the right place for them if I have doubts.

Accountant  -- I make budgets, manage finances, save money.

I'm also an alarm clock, a handyman, a photographer, personal assistant. I do so much more than I ever thought. I'm so much more than just a mom.
