Wreck This Journal: Episode 1

Some of you might have heard of this little book called Wreck This Journal, but many of you probably haven't. I hadn't heard of it until just recently and I decided I wanted to give it a go. Basically it is a book that you wreck. It has about 215 pages of prompts that lead you to destroy pages, color on pages, write on pages, pretty much everything.

I have seen these videos all around YouTube (that's where I spend my free time when I have a chance because YouTube is awesome), but I don't really do YouTube as as YouTuber. I write this blog so although there won't be process videos on how I do each page because I'm taking pictures there will be pictures and my feelings about the page and sometimes an explanation about the pages.

I going to say upfront that I can't promise any kind of regular schedule yet with this series because fall into winter is just a busy time but I'm going to do my best to keep up with these and keep up with my book. So today is a few of the first pages I did, so here we go!

Page 1: Add your own page numbers

This one was simple enough. Although it did take me awhile to get through all 215 pages. I then just decorated the page with a bunch of poorly drawn numbers. I am still working on handlettering skills including numbers so they aren't the best. My my regret about this page is that I wish I had done the numbers bigger and more layers of numbers because I just think it would have looked cooler.

Page 2: Crack the spine

This is the second page that I did. It definitely makes it easier to crack the spine early on so that it's easier to get through the book. I was going to draw a spine like I saw so many do but I realized I can't actually draw a spine so a regular old crack it was!

Page 3: Leave this page blank on purpose

I'm a rule follower!

Page 26-27: Tear strips - rip it up!

I colored this page before I cut up the strips. It was pretty simple. I saw some pictures later that were really cool and I wished I had seen them earlier and had some more artist abilities - basically they were pictures of a suit and since you attach that page to the page underneath, the underneath page was the superman symbol. I'm not doing it justice in explanation so type in Wreck This Journal and Tear Strips page into google and you'll see them. They are pretty awesome. My is lame but I'm okay with that.

Page 29: Glue, Staple or Tape These Pages Together

I didn't do anything too fancy as far as decorating this page but I did glue this page with the torn strips page so there that. Again I wish I had done something with both of these pages that was a little cooler but oh well. Maybe if I decided to do this again one day I will do something better then.

Page 120-121: Close your eyes. Connect the dots from memory.

So turns out my memory is lacking. I had it close but I didn't distant them out far enough. Oh well. I then tried to turn it into a solar system/space scene. Kind of lame and not great but I'm still working on my artistic skills. Just go with it. It's not exactly supposed to be the prettiest thing ever....right....?

Page 145 - Find a way to wear the journal

So not overly original here but it's not like I'm making a shirt out of the thing. So I wore it as a hat for about 30 seconds to take a couple pictures and there you have it. I haven't drawn anything on the page yet but I will probably do something on the page to show that I actually did it.

Page 146-147 -  This page is a sign. What do you want it to say?

I had seen a few of these in all the videos I wanted but I wasn't sure what I wanted to do at first. But then I was watching something that made me thing of this. And it made me think of that this is a message we all need more. It's easy to tear ourselves down and sometimes we just need to be reminded that you are enough.

Page 176-177: Close the journal. Write/scribble on the edges.

This is actually the very first page I did. It took me about a week after I got the book to get the nerve to actually attempt this book at all because I was just nervous about jumping in. But I knew I just needed to do something. And I decided that this would be a good place to start so the edges would easier to draw on before they got too chunky.

Page 199 - Hide this page in your neighbor's yard.

Our little secret!

....Or maybe not. So we don't really have neighbors because on one side the house hasn't sold and the other side someone bought the house like three weeks ago but no one has moved in. Weird. And okay I didn't leave that there because that felt weird so I went back and got it. But it didn't say I had to leave it hidden in the neighbor's yard so ha!

So there you have it. 10 prompts down. Like I said earlier I have no idea how often I'll be posting this or even if anyone is interested but I have had fun so far doing the things in the book. Although it is tough as a book lover to mess up a book but I'm hoping it will also help with the whole loosening up creatively and knowing that it's okay for things not to be perfect.
