Bump to Baby: Changing Times

Things are about to change for real around here. And can you ever really be completely ready for it? Adding another kid to the mix is a big deal. When I was pregnant when Connor I remember feeling worried about the impact on Addison. We had a good balance and I knew adding another kid into the mix would change that balance. And of course it did but it wasn't as disastrous as I thought I would be.

I have honestly worried less about the effect having Emma will have on Addison and Connor than I did about the effect having Connor would have on Addison. Maybe part of that is because we have already done this before. Maybe because Addison and Connor have each other. Maybe because I know in the end I know that Emma will find her place in our family and we will be a complete family of five.

There are moment however I worry about how Connor will handle it all. Addison was always a daddy's girl so during the day having to share mama wasn't too bad. Sometimes she still struggles to share daddy with Connor even now. However Connor is very much a mama's boy. So sometimes I worry more about how he'll handle the adjustment to sharing mama during the day.

A lot of the changes are really more adjusting to having to take care of a kindergartner, a toddler and a newborn and juggling all three at once. They are all in very different stages right now in what they want and what they need so a lot of it is just us figuring out how to make it all work. Making sure Addie still gets her daddy-daughter dates so she gets the one-on-one time she always wants from daddy. Making sure that Connor has mama read him stories and put him to bed sometimes so he gets that time to himself. Making sure Emma has what she needs. And all at the same time making sure we aren't ignoring our own relationship despite juggling the kids and the tiredness that comes from having a new baby.

The hubs and I have been talking lately about things we have forgotten about having a baby from Wonder Weeks to baby toys to formula and diapers. We have a whole other age of toys that are about to take over our house. But of course it's all worth it. And we know that we can do just about anything because we are partners through this all. Plus the man is a rock star with babies and a swaddle expert.

At this point Addison understands that a baby is coming and has had a lot of questions about her and what she will be able to do as a baby. She is excited to help and meet her sister, and even more excited about actually having a sister. Connor, on the other hand, knows that someone named Emma is part of the family and if you ask him he will tell you that Emma is in mama's belly but he doesn't truly understand what that means. He is only two after all. He does get that he'll be a big brother and he's very excited about that. But mostly he doesn't understand who Emma is and where she's coming from and that she's a baby.

We definitely know there are changing happening in our family as we go from a family of four to a family of five. But we are also very excited about those changes. It will take time to adjust but we can't wait to see how Emma fits in and to finally meet her.
