Date Night In

Since having kids Rob and I haven't gone on a ton of dates. And when we do go on dates it's usually to the movies and dinner. We like what we like and are always good with what we do. What we don't do a lot is at home dates. It seems like a weird concept truthfully. We spend every night together so what's so special about having a "date" at home? I guess the nights when we decide on a movie together and to play a game could be considered a date night but I don't know if I think of it that way.

Anyway, this year for Valentine's Day I really considered what we were going to do. We usually don't go out around Valentine's Day because we don't really care for the crowds of people. In fact normally on Valentine's Day we order pizza and watch a movie. We are quite the romantics.

Leading up to Valentine's Day I told Rob that I had something planned. I told him that I ordered a Date Night In Box. We really had no idea what to expect but since it came with a recipes and a playlist and everything we needed in a box for a date in, we were willing to give it a go. Before Valentine's Day I got everything I needed to make our meal - getting enough to add two little people in with the meal portion of our date. But truthfully I wasn't sure how it would go over for anyone.

So we started our night with Spaghetti Squash Cacio E Pepe with frozen chocolate covered bananas and French Green Beans. There is also a section about a good wine pairing and even a non-alcoholic choice. We are not wine drinkers so we opted for the Blackberry and Mint Infused Water.

It may not photograph well or at least my food photography skills are seriously lacking. But it's still not as pretty as the original recipe but it was delicious and actually everyone but Connor ate all of it and were good with having this meal again just for a dinner. However the Blackberry and Mint Infused Water was seriously lacking and mostly just tasted like mint water which was a bit strong for me. So that was meh, but the food was delicious.

The box was called Key to My Heart and neither of us peeked in the box before the night came. We put the big kids to bed and took turns calming Emma while we looked through our box.

Inside the box was two snacks, our actual date and also a game. We read through the information and learned that with this box we were going to pretend like we were lovers that were separated thanks to WWI but the war was over and now we were trying to find each other but through a mutual friend we passed notes about where we were going to meet. But we had to figure out the clues to figure it out, using each of our strengths to do so. But first we were to write letters to each (while eating our crepes - which were chocolate and strawberry, by the description it sounded like they were supposed to be chocolate and strawberry in each but it turned out that one was chocolate and one was strawberry - the strawberry was better).

We took our Love Language quiz also included then wrote our letters sealing them until we "found" each other at our secret location. Then we started going through the clues. They were pretty easy until we got to clue #4 then got seriously stuck. But since this was our date we decided to move on anyway and as soon as we opened the fifth one, we knew immediately what it was. Then after we solved all the clues, we exchanged letters.

After that we moved on the game. And the game was fun. Basically we had a stack of cards and we would look at our word then could only use one word to describe it so the other person could guess what it was. It took as awhile to get through but we had a lot of fun and laughed a lot.

By the time we finished the box, we both decided it was worth doing again and wanted to get next month's box. With three kids at home, it was worth setting time for a night together each month even if it was just a home and this was so much better than a movie and a board game.

I was honestly not sure what Rob would think about it because it was different and romantic but he loved it as much as I did. I highly recommend it (I know there are a lot of these boxes out there, but we got the Date Night In Box). It was probably our best Valentine's Day we've had together truthfully.
